Rising Star – Dr. Ben Carson To Heal A Bleeding Nation!

For many people the National Prayer Breakfast of 2013Dr. Ben Carson, will be remembered as the day that Dr. Ben Carson delivered a keynote address that inspired much hope for a nation in distress.  Yet, what may be hope for some is agitation to others, as much of the subject matter  of his speech focused on the controversial policies of  President Obama.  As the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at John Hopkins, the good doctor did not spare the patients (American people and the President) from his diagnosis as to the cause and cure of the disease that ails our land.

First, Dr. Carson began with the importance of being able to speak freely. He indicted Political Correctness (PC) as a serious threat to our First Amendment right to free speech. Then he elaborated on how it is affecting our thoughts and actions.  He argued that PC stifles personal intellectual development and public discourse.

PC is dangerous. Because, you see, this country one of the founding principles was freedom of thought and freedom of expression. and it muffles people. It puts a muzzle on them, and at the same time, keeps people from discussing important issues while the fabric of this society is being changed. We cannot fall for that trick. What we need to do is start talking about things, talking about things that are important.

Exactly right, Benjamin Carson hit the nail on the head!  To muzzle people and marginalize those who disagree with the social engineers who seek to collectivize society into the Utopian fantasy of their dreams, is the very purpose of Political Correctness.  Polite discourse does not mean that issues must be avoided or altered, because someone might be offended. In recent years, over sensitivity to the “feelings” of others as labeled by whatever group  they have been assigned to by the PC police,  has been very effective in shutting down any argument that could hinder the advance of whatever radical agenda is being promoted.  Unanimity of speech and unanimity of thought through the pressure of a PC lens, has done more to retard the intellectual acuity of a generation than any Hollywood adult/political cartoon or sitcom could hope to achieve.

Second, he introduced the topic of parental responsibility to actively engage in their children’s education.  Dr. Carson elaborated on how reading not only liberates the mind, but also the soul.  Through reading he came to understand that the poverty he knew as a child was only temporary, because he gained the tools that he would need to change his future.  Education beyond the basics required from the Public school system are crucial for success today and because of special interest groups, it is even more important that parents know what their children are being taught.  What I liked most about Dr. Carson’s advocacy for education were his numerous references to the Founding Fathers and history of the United States as so important to the understanding of who we are as a nation.  Benjamin Carson sees himself as a Christian first and as an American second.  For him, the Founding Fathers are not ‘dead white men’ of another century whose words should be ignored today.  Obviously, Dr. Carson has not been educated properly through the revisionist (Communist) perspective of literacy!

Many people have argued that our education system has been intentionally ‘dumbing down’ the nation’s youth.  However, I argue that their parents are victims too, as this mischief has now been going on for at least forty years.  Dr. Carson reminded the audience that,

According to the Founding Father’s, our system of government was designed for a well informed and educated populace and when they become less informed, they become vulnerable.

This statement is very important.  The acusation of ‘dumbing down’ and making the American people vulnerable does not only fall on our education system, but also on the Press, a case that I will present in a future article.

Ben Carson’s mother carried the burden of raising her two sons alone and insisted on independence for herself, as well as her sons.  In  other words, no help from the State.  She defined strong and loving boundaries that instilled a hunger for education and personal responsibility.  Yet, Dr. Carson also credits Jesus for his success in life and openly declares that it is to Jesus Christ that he serves.   No excuses for laziness in his household, two books a week, very limited TV and Mom made sure that her sons followed through.  All this, in spite of the fact that she worked two to three jobs just to pay the bills.  No victims here, no sense of entitlement from historical prejudice, but rather the idea that the gold ring was waiting to be grabbed and that her sons just needed the tools to make it happen. I say it is the Marxist strategy of divide and conquer through race, class, gender and now sexual orientation that should be flushed down the toilet of destructive ideas.

Some have criticized Ben Carson’s speech as partisan and inappropriate, but I strongly disagree.  Only by exposing what the differences are, can  problems be identified and is that not the nature of a doctors work?  Who better to distinguish what is healthy from that which is deceased by infection, than a doctor?  How can a physician hope to help the patient, be it a failing nation or its ideologically impaired leadership, if he/she can’t be upfront about the threat?  Dr. Carson delivered the bad news as gently as he could, as doctors do everyday, so what do politics have to do with it? He advocated empowerment through personal responsibility rather than Big Government and he chastised the class warfare rhetoric that has been bandied about in recent years to justify those labeled as “rich” ($200,000. +/?) for more taxes.  Then he  suggested that the national deficit could be cured with a percentage based on the biblical tithing  system.  He called for the elimination of tax breaks for special interest groups and presidential campaign contributors.  Now that must have been very difficult for the President to listen to! However, his best suggestion was on Health Care and as a doctor, Benjamin Carson is more qualified to speak about this issue than Barack Obama ever will be.

Third, Dr. Carson argued that one of the main reasons that Washington has so much trouble getting anything done, is because an overwhelming majority of politicians among both Democrats and Republicans are lawyers and that lawyers are trained to – win!  He believes that candidates from various backgrounds would better serve the Public, now who would argue with that?  When Dr. Carson closed with the analogy of the Left and Right wings of the American eagle to the Democratic and Republican Parties as part of the same nation under God, he wrapped his speech beautifully in the flag of the American Dream, which in his eyes, is still possible.  The American people also need to regain that vision!

A wise president would not be offended by this message, but a thin skinned ideologue would.  Especially after the President used that same platform last year to preach his version of a social gospel from Luke 12:48, out of context to create a pretext for his political imperative to redistribute wealth from those who have more to those who have less.

From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.  Luke 12:48

Conservative syndicated columnist Cal Thomas believes that Dr. Carson should apologize to President Obama.  He argues that because of the venue, The National Prayer Breakfast, President Obama had a right to expect a different message about another Kingdom.  In fact, one year ago in his article of The Washington Post, in 2012, Cal Thomas wrote:

The purpose of the National Prayer Breakfast, which will be held for the 60th time on Thursday, is to attempt to bridge political and even religious differences through what is called “the spirit of Jesus of Nazareth” in order that leaders consider a Higher Authority to Whom they are ultimately accountable and answerable.  Cal Thomas, 1 February 2012, Washington Post

So if the National Prayer Breakfast is conducted in “the spirit of Jesus of Nazareth” then perhaps it is good to remember that Jesus did not avoid strong words of criticism when he felt they were needed. Jesus was quick to admonish many Jewish leaders of his day about their empty outer faith and how many of their teachings had been twisted and perverted from the original intent. In an analogy that he used with the Pharisaical elders  whose teachings basically addressed the outer cleansing of a cup or dish, whereas the inside remained dirty, Jesus said:

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee, first cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also. Matt 23:25-26

So in the “spirit of Jesus of Nazareth” Dr. Carson gently and humbly delivered his message and offered solutions, but as a doctor he knows that the final decision is always up to the patient.

Below is the speech that Dr. Carson gave at The National Prayer Breakfast on 7 February 2013,  listen and decide for yourself.
